“Poppington” is a fabricated word popularized by pop star Nicki Minaj, defined in the Urban Dictionary as being extraordinary to the maximum level. For instance, 60 Orchard Street is so poppington right now thanks to the curatorial skills of hip hop impresario Damon Dash. This newest neighborhood showroom, specializing in “street style” programming, kicks off September 27 with an inaugural exhibition called “Quality of Life.”
“Quality of Life” is a group art show that will feature contemporary street scrawlers Beau, Jim Joe, Katsu, Phil, Pixote, Sabio, and WOMP. These peeps are certainly no strangers to the Lower East Side. Especially Jim Joe and Katsu, whose handiwork is stamped on nearly every surface around here.
Poppington is yet another in the series of Chelsea creative folk making the crosstown move to the Lower East Side. Much like his previous endeavor, Damon Dash is using this storefront as a creative incubator for artists, graphic designers, and musicians to work under one roof.
