A Fifth Grader Starts for a Florida High School Basketball Varsity Team (Video)

With a height of 4'5", you can't surely expect Florida fifth grader Julian Newman to be a factor against varsity basketball players who are mostly an entire foot taller than him, right? Minor details. Newman is a starter onDowney Christian High School's varsity squad, and he is killing it. According to Maxpreps.com, the young prodigy is averaging 12.6 points, 9.8 assists, and 3.8 steals.
You'd think high school sports governing politics would come in the way, but that's not the case here. Downey Christian exists outside the jurisdiction of the Florida High School Athletic Association, which states: "A student’s four-year limit of high school eligibility is not affected by the student’s participation in interscholastic athletics before beginning the ninth grade for the first time." In other words, Newman can still play in the association when he graduates from junior high.
Then there's the fact that his father coaches the Downey Christian team. Click the video above to see if Newman's position is just family ties or straight skill.
